Job Opportunities in League of Legends

League of Legends isn’t just only a casual, fun video game you can enjoy with your friends. Surprisingly, there are multiple ways to make a living off this game. For many people, they depend on this game as a means of income. Like some other video games that are a part of the eSports scene, League of Legends provides an opportunity to become a professional, of course if you have the skills and are willing to dedicate nearly all your waking hours to playing this mentally straining game.  Other ways to make League of Legends your job is directly working for Riot Games, the company that designed the game, or being a Youtuber or Twitch live streamer.

As a professional League of Legends player, you have to be one of the best players in the game. This means that you were able to climb to Challenger, the game’s highest rank tier, and then get scouted by a professional team to come and play for them. To put into perspective how hard it is to attain Challenger rank, these players are the top 0.02% of more than 100,000,000 people. These professionals spend more than twelve hours a day just playing the game in order to get better and get ready for their competitions. Speaking of competitions, they are at the regional and international levels. Teams compete against each other in their respective regions and the top three seeds from each region move on to the international competitions. Recently, the most anticipated competition, Worlds, started on Saturday, the 23rd of September.  For the last two years, the South Korean team SK Telecom 1 has dominated at Worlds, winning it a record three times. Their first win was in 2013.

Another job with League of Legends is actually working for Riot Games, the company that created and constantly updates the game. There are multiple jobs in this field, whether you want to be a champion splash art artist, one of the developers, or a simple assistant. You can also be a shoutcaster for the competitions, but this requires a very in depth knowledge of the game mechanics. A job at Riot Games obviously requires you to have played the game, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be good at the game.

The final method to earning income from League of Legends is independently streaming it on Twitch.tv or recording videos of it to post on YouTube. Many passionate gamers livestream themselves playing League of Legends and with a little bit of luck, skill, and humor, they can garner an average viewer count of more than 5,000. These streamers also include many professionals that want to earn some additional cash while practicing the game too. Multiple streamers hire an editor to cut up their stream videos into highlights and edit them to upload on YouTube. However, some people just decide to YouTube and not deal with streaming. Usually, these YouTubers make informative videos about the game. The complexity of League of Legends allows numerous job opportunities to spring up and be presented to the player base, giving players the tools to create a life out of it.
